Financial Services Company
Los Angeles 1992Introduction
Human Resources Vice President invites organizational consultant with expertise in social network analysis(SNA) to investigate what is happening inside a key department where morale and productivity are declining rapidly. The department is composed of salaried, knowledge workers.
In September 1991, consultant gathers data on the work relationships. Data shows department manager is a bottleneck in the work flow. In January 1992, a new manager is brought in who desires a more distributed work flow. Consultant returns in October 1992 and measures the new work flow and several other networks.
Below is the department's prescribed network -- the formal hierarchy.
Thomas, the department manager, is in the middle[name hidden by link]. Rosa, the department's administrative assistant reports to Thomas. The team leaders, Martha, Martin, Susan, Albert and John all report directly to Thomas. Each team leader has two direct reports except for Martha who has one direct report.
